College Coach
As a College Coach, you’ll work alongside LUCA staff to guide Scholars in exploring colleges, staying organized with applications, and making informed decisions about their future. Your mentorship helps students see what’s possible—and realize their full potential.
What You'll Help With:
College exploration and fit
Application timelines
Goal setting and encouragement
Common application
Personal statement
Decision support
Guidance and encouragement
Commitment & Support
Coaches are supported by the LUCA team through training sessions and check-ins and have the ability to meet with their Scholar (virtually or in-person) at least once per week from the end of their junior year to the end of their senior year of high school.
The relationship between a Scholar and their College Coach is designed to last, offering meaningful guidance and connection that continues long after college decisions are made.
Personal statements can be one of the most intimidating parts of the college process. Essay volunteers provide feedback, encouragement, and editing support so Scholars can share their authentic voices and experiences.
LUCA Career Mentors work one-on-one with Scholars during college who are actively pursuing internships and early career opportunities.
Share your time and professional insight- and help students strengthen how they present their skills, experiences, and aspirations in today’s job market.
As a Career Mentor, you’ll provide individualized guidance that builds confidence, clarity, and career readiness—supporting Scholars as they take the next steps toward meaningful employment.
What You'll Help With:
College exploration and fit
Updating and refining resumes and cover letters
Articulating skills, experiences, and accomplishments
Preparing for internship and job applications
Navigating early career pathways and workplace expectations
Navigating financial aid can be overwhelming—especially for first-generation families facing unfamiliar forms, deadlines, and terminology. LUCA volunteers play a vital role in guiding families through the financial aid process, helping ensure that cost does not become a barrier to college.
As a Financial Aid Support Volunteer, you’ll assist families in understanding and completing key aid applications, interpreting financial award letters, and identifying strategies to close remaining gaps between aid and college costs.
What You Can Help With:
Completing and submitting FAFSA, NYS TAP, and CSS Profile applications
Reviewing and explaining financial aid award letters
Identifying scholarship and affordability options
Helping families understand college cost comparisons
Providing reassurance and clarity throughout the process
Your support empowers families to make informed decisions and helps Scholars enroll and persist in the colleges that best fit their goals.
